Hot water storage systems are designed to provide a reliable supply of heated water throughout a property, and the plumbing arrangements differ depending on whether the system is vented or unvented.
In a vented hot water storage system, cold water is supplied from a storage cistern, usually located in the loft. This water flows down into the hot water cylinder by gravity. The cylinder itself can be heated either directly, using an immersion heater inside the cylinder, or indirectly through a coil connected to a boiler or solar system. A vent pipe rises from the cylinder and connects back to the cold-water cistern, providing both a safety outlet and a way to accommodate expansion as the water heats. Hot water is drawn from the top of the cylinder and distributed around the property. Because the system relies on gravity, the water pressure is relatively low and depends on the vertical distance between the cold-water tank and the outlets.
In an unvented hot water storage system, the cold water supply comes directly from the mains rather than from a cistern. The water first passes through a set of control valves, including a pressure-reducing valve, non-return valve, strainer, and an expansion relief valve. The hot water cylinder is sealed and made of stainless steel, and it may be heated directly by immersion heaters or indirectly via a coil connected to a boiler or heat pump. Since the system is pressurised, expansion of the water as it heats is absorbed either by an external expansion vessel or by an internal air gap built into the cylinder. Several safety devices are required to protect the system, including a temperature and pressure relief valve, an expansion relief valve, a discharge pipe that leads to a tundish and safely outside, and thermostats or thermal cut-outs to control heating. Hot water leaves the top of the cylinder at mains pressure, providing strong flow rates suitable for modern showers and multiple bathroom use.
In both systems, the overall cycle is similar: cold water enters the cylinder, the water is heated and stored until needed, expansion is controlled by the vent or expansion device, and hot water is distributed to taps and appliances from the top of the cylinder. The key difference lies in the source of the cold-water supply and the method of controlling pressure and expansion.
